How do I get a CPF?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a CPF?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">The CPF (Cadastro de Pessoa F\u00edsica) is a registration document for citizens with the Receita Federal (Brazilian Tax Authorities) that allows people to be registered as a tax contributor here in Brazil. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">It isn\u2019t necessary to have a CPF number but without one <strong>you<\/strong> <strong>will not be able to carry out certain financial operations<\/strong> such as buying a phone SIM card or opening a bank account. This is a mandatory step for reasons of identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To find out more:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The &#8220;RG&#8221; ID is not unique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People who live in Brazil use a CPF as if it was a second ID card. The official identity card for Brazilian citizens is known as The RG, \u201cRegistro Geral\u201d. The use of the CPF stems from the fact that it is necessary to have a unique form of identification, because the RG number only applies to the state in which you are living, despite it being a nationally recognised document.<br>It is therefore possible that two different people may have the same RG number, issued by different states. It is also possible that one same person could have up to 26 different RGs, as shown below in the Folha de S\u00e3o Paulo report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.folha.uol.com.br\/infograficos\/2013\/10\/78566-a-farra-das-carteiras-de-identidade.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aprenda2.org\/blog\/portugues\/files\/2015\/02\/farra-rgs-300x189.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-144\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Report from the &#8216;Folha de S\u00e3o Paulo&#8217; showing that one person can have several RGs. Even though this seems pretty unbelievable, it&#8217;s totally legal!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carteira Nacional de Identidade: The new ID<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to some specialists, due to the fact that RG numbers are not controlled by one nationwide system, it is very vulnerable and therefore potentially easy for criminals to commit identity fraud. To combat this problem &#8211; after many years of failed attempts &#8211; the&nbsp;Federal government created&nbsp;a new ID in February 2022 called&nbsp; \u201c<em>Carteira Nacional de Identidade<\/em>\u201d through the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov.br\/en\/web\/dou\/-\/decreto-n-10.977-de-23-de-fevereiro-de-2022-382332304\" target=\"_blank\">Executive Order #10.977<\/a>. This will replace all RG numbers by 2032 using the CPF as a unique&nbsp;ID number.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/blog\/novo-rg.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The new &#8220;RG&#8221; uses the &#8220;CPF&#8221; number as a unique ID number<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The &#8220;e-CPF&#8221;: digital certificate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, the government launched the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E-CPF\">e-CPF<\/a>\u201d, an electronic document in the form of a digital certificate (ICP-Brasil), that guarantees the authenticity and integrity of the communication between the people and the <em>Secretaria da Receita Federal<\/em> (SRF). It works exactly like a digital version of the CPF, as it is linked to it. The e-CPF serves, among other purposes, as a form of handing in income declarations and other electronic documents by the use of electronic signatures.
